Hello lovely people! I am so excited to share with you three documentaries on Netflix that changed my life. I am not at all exaggerating when I say these documentaries changed my life! They seriously did.
Although I LOVE watching my usual shows on Netflix such as That 70s Show & Grey’s Anatomy, I do enjoy taking some time to broaden my horizon of issues going on in the world. Watching documentaries allows me to really open my eyes to different issues but in an entertaining and enjoyable way. The three documentaries I am going to share with you are informative, interesting, well produced, and enjoyable. After watching these three, my heart has been changed, my perspective has changed, and my attitude has been changed in many different ways. I urge you to start watching one. See if you get hooked. Maybe you will gain a new perspective or understanding. I have a strong feeling you will be changed for the better! Grab your popcorn! (and maybe a tissue too)
The True Cost
I first discovered this documentary when one of my college professors made a reference to it. I am currently a Fashion Merchandising student, therefore I figured it couldn’t hurt to gain a little understanding and knowledge about the fast-paced fashion industry. By the end of the documentary, my whole perfective on fashion had changed. I had no idea what a HUGE impact the fashion industry has on the environment, animals, and people in third world countries. Little did I know that my $5 t-shirt from Forever21 was hand-sewn by a man/woman being underpaid in a sweatshop. Heartbreaking. That is only a taste of the issues, and insights revealed in this documentary. After watching this, it started a fire in my heart to change the fashion industry. Though I am only one person, I desire to make a difference as I enter into this industry. I urge you to take a look…see what you will walk away with.
Any animal lovers out there? ME! I have such a soft spot for animals. I always have. Most of the time I refuse to watch animal documentaries because I know exactly what will happen. I will start watching it…see an animal abused or mistreated…I start crying…turn off the TV and that’s the end of it. With Black Fish it was different. I toughed it out all the way until the end. Have you ever been to Sea World? Maybe a Marine park…someplace where you have seen dolphins and orca whales swimming circles in oversized bathtubs. Same. They seem happy of course. They get fed, receive lots of love…but how are the animals really being treated? What about when trainers are killed because of the gentle giant who has gone crazy from being kept in a fishbowl? My eyes were opened. I learned so much about how this industry is run…and who is really being benefitted from these beautiful creatures being kept in captivity. I loved watching this, and like I said…I was changed for the better. I urge you to watch this.
What the Health
After watching this I certainly said, “What the health?!” This documentary was so interesting! Do we really know what we are eating all of the time? As early as pre-school we are introduced to the food pyramid, My Plate, and are told what foods we should eat to be “healthy”. But is all of that really true? Are the things we are told to eat helping us or hurting us? Are major food companies withholding information from us? This documentary dives in deep! I urge you to watch it and find out! Though I did not become a vegan at all after watching this (I love chicken too much), my eyes were opened to many of the foods I eat, thinking they are healthy but could be putting me a greater risk for health problems in the future. There are so many positive things to take away from this documentary. It doesn’t mean you have to have a drastic lifestyle change…it could mean you just take away a few nuggets (pun intended) of beneficial information! Give it a watch 😉
