Often times we find ourselves presented with many opportunities, but what do we do with those opportunities? I know for me, I’ve personally turned down due to my own personal reasons when I’ve should’ve taken the opportunity. Here are things that may be keeping you from opportunities.
- Questioning/Self-Doubting Yourself. I’ll admit, this is probably the biggest for me. I went to school for fashion merchandising and I always wanted to be a celebrity stylist, but lack of confidence and fear of what others would say about my styling held me back from following my dreams. However, the moment you begin doubting yourself is the moment you let fear take over your life. I’ve let fear prevent from going to interviews within fashion and I’ve let fear keep me in an industry I have no strong desire to be in. Fear of following your dreams and being the best at your chosen profession is not how you want to live. If you don’t believe in yourself, who will? To be successful in anything you do, you have to be confident and fully believe in your capabilities.
- Listening to What Others Say. A lot of times when other people see you succeeding in life or doing something to follow your dreams, they like to project their fears onto you or try to say things that’ll discourage you from doing what you want to do. “Don’t go try to be an artist, you won’t make much money for it.” However, if you don’t listen to them and keeping doing what you want, in 5 years, Jay-Z or Diddy may be spending $5M on your painting.
- Comfort. This is also a big one for me. I’ve gotten so comfortable with being in HR and working in corporate America sitting behind a desk, that I’ve forgotten what it’s like to step outside of my comfort zone. Never get too comfortable, because at the end of the day a Corporate Company want get comfortable with you and will let you go at any given time with zero notice.
