Woman Crush Wednesday this week is Kahlana Barfield Brown. I first found out about this beaut at Essence Music Festival 2017, which is also why my yearning to be in the Journalism/Editorial/Blogging industry heightened. Brown is the Beauty Director for Instyle Magazine. She writes and edits beauty stories, oversees celebrity beauty shoots and represents the magazine at industry events.
Her road to becoming the Beauty Director for Instyle Magazine goes as follows: She started out as an intern with Suede Magazine, a short lived fashion magazine and shortly gained a general intern position with her now employer, InStyle. After her internship, her boss asked if a job opportunity opened, would she be willing to move to New York for a job with them, she replied Yes! In 2005, she was offered a job as a Beauty Assistant, in 2008, she was promoted to Associate Beauty Editor, Beauty Editor in 2009, Senior Beauty Editor in 2011, and now as we know her title to be Beauty Director in 2013.
She graduated from Howard University as a Journalism major and Fashion minor. I chose Kahlana as this week’s WCW because I admire her and her work and her journey to get to where she is today. I want to be the Beauty/Fashion Director of a fashion magazine someday and I’m almost to the point where I’m impatient, but she did it. It took a little under 10 years to get to where she is, but she did. Everyday I come up with blog post ideas, type them up, and schedule them to be published and everyday I want to give up. Nobody is reading my blog post, nobody is promoting my blog, nobody its talking about my blog post, so why am I doing it? Because of the love I have for writing and the passion and dedication I have to someday get to her status.
Keep shining Kahlana, hope to see you at the top someday.
